Join JHSM for a docent-led bus tour of three Detroit churches, each of which is a former synagogue. The caretakers of these historic houses of worship have carefully preserved the buildings and many of the Jewish symbols and art. Blended together with their own religious symbols these buildings are a tribute to our forefathers and foremothers and honor both religious traditions.
We will be visiting Bethel Community Transformation Center, the former Temple Beth El at Woodward and Gladstone; New Mt. Zion Church, the former B'nai David on Elmhurst; and the Clinton Street Church, the former Congregation Shaarey Zedek on Chicago Blvd. We will also be driving by the former Temple Israel, Adat Shalom, Central High School, Mumford High School, and the old JCC at Curtis and Meyers. Tour fees include entrance to each location, a dairy lunch (Kosher lunch upon request), snacks, and transportation. The tour will be led by Ruthe Goldstein and Jeannie Weiner.
Tour will meet at Congregation Beth Ahm, 5075 W. Maple Rd, West Bloomfield, MI, at 10:15 AM, where there is free parking. The bus will depart at 10:30 AM and arrive back around 4:00 PM.
