Hidden Treasures of the DPL's Special Collections

Join us for a fabulous afternoon at the Detroit Public Library!  Mark Bowden, coordinator of special collections, will offer "From Bibles to Baseball," a lecture highlighting some of the library's most remarkable items, including a 1912 bejeweled cover to Alfred, Lord Tennyson's The May Queen (below left) and the 1768 deed to Belle Isle, then known as Hog Island (below right).  Music librarian Cully Sommers will walk us through the library's new display case about Ossip Gabrilowitsch, famed and founding conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1918 until his death in 1936.  Special guest Joan Jampel will introduce us to the U.S. presidential letters gathered by her father, Henry Meyers.  A complimentary dessert reception will follow.
