A. Alfred Taubman Heritage Council Endowment

When your children shall ask their parents in time to come.” Joshua 4:21

Jewish Soldiers in the Civil WarThe founding mothers and fathers of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan (JHSM) chose this proverb wisely.  Since 1959, JHSM has been dedicated to sharing and celebrating the contributions of our people to our area, our state, our nation and our world. The A. Alfred Taubman Heritage Council Endowment Fund helps to insure the continuity of this organization for the generations to come.

Here is how the JHSM carries out that mission:

  • Our award-winning Settlers to Citizens Tours explore the city, highlighting our historical roots and Detroit’s current rejuvenation. By bus, boat and even by bike, these tours instill a sense of pride and strengthen Jewish identity among young and old.  With the participation of volunteer guides and donor support, JHSM offers the tour at no cost to all area Jewish schools.

  • Strong, lasting relationships have been forged by the JHSM with organizations throughout our greater community: the leadership of the African-American churches, historical organizations, Jewish studies departments and women’s groups.

  • Our annual journal, Michigan Jewish History, is the longest continuously published journal of local Jewish history in the nation and is circulated to libraries and universities around the world.

  • Our user-friendly, updated website contains a complete digitized set of our 53 years of Journals and a searchable index.

  • The JHSM placed and helps maintain historical markers throughout the state, in cooperation with the Michigan Historical Commission.

  • Plans are in the works to digitize and create a searchable database of our immense Yearbook Collection. Imagine your unborn descendants, 50 years from now, typing in your name and finding your high school graduation picture!

As parents and grandparents, isn’t it our job to record and preserve our stories so that our children and grandchildren will know – and cherish – their past?

We encourage you to mark your place in history by making a generous gift to the A. Alfred Taubman Heritage Council Endowment Fund of the JHSM.  Add your name to the list of more than 200 proud endowment supporters.
