Settlers to Citizens: A Tour of Historic Jewish Detroit
November 29, 2013 @ 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Friday, November 29, 2013
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
History comes to life on JHSM’s award-winning Settlers to Citizens bus tour.
Join JHSM as we relive Detroit’s Jewish history. Our trip will take us back in time as we visit some of Detroit’s old Jewish neighborhoods and jump to the present as we catch a glimpse of the Detroit of today. Together, we’ll explore the history of many buildings, sites and neighborhoods (some familiar and some that you may never have seen before) and gain an appreciation of how early Jewish Detroiters were able to thrive in what was for them a strange and unfamiliar land. We will also see the work of today’s urban entrepreneurs who are creating a new and re-invigorated Detroit. Designed to educate and inspire, our route includes Detroit’s new Riverfront Walk; the streets and buildings of the Oakland, Twelfth Street, Linwood, Dexter and Northwest Detroit neighborhoods; views of the Jewish symbols on former community buildings; and a tour of the beautiful former B’nai David Synagogue.
We are pleased to offer this popular tour on the day after Thanksgiving, a day when families and friends can share in this experience together!
Members $36; Non-members $44; Children (age 6 to 16) $30 Family Pack/JHSM members only $130 (2 adults, 2 children; includes Early Jewish Days in Michigan, a children’s coloring book)
