A JHSM Road Trip to the Harbor Country of Southwestern Michigan

October 25, 2013 @ 6:00 PM - October 27, 2013 @ 12:00 PM

$105
Karonsky's Resort

From the 1920s through the 1950s, Chicagoans, Michiganders and other Midwestern Jewish vacation seekers often traveled to the shores of Western Michigan to stay and play at the many resorts lining Lake Michigan. This fall, JHSM is hosting our members and friends a Southwestern Michigan Road Trip to learn about and explore Michigan’s western coast.

Friday, October 25 – Sunday, October 27
JHSM members $105 per person (plus hotel)

First Hebrew Congregation in South Haven, dedicated in 1929, has been carefully preserved and recently renovated.

In South Haven alone, the Jewish summer population would swell up to 25,000.  This Jewish coastline, the Catskills of the Midwest, featured resorts and hotels of every size and shape.  Vacationers could dance under the stars, listen to orchestras and dance bands, eat good Kosher food, play cards, send their kinder to camp and find holy places to worship.  Many of those original resorts are gone, but what remains is rich with culture and tradition…and beautiful sunsets.

Our weekend will include Friday night services at Temple B’nai Shalom in Benton Harbor, a visit to First Hebrew Congregation in South Haven and a tour of Mary, City of David’s Resort and synagogue.
